17 Types of Consumers (Learners) Every EdTech Startup Must Know

17 Types of Consumers (Learners) Every EdTech Startup Must Know Rupam Acculi Lyfas

The 17-Learner Type Consumers

1) Non-learners(No matter what won’t learn)

2) Self-learners ( will figure out what to learn and will learn themselves)

3) Group learners (Learns better while discussing with others)

4) Taught-learners(Learns if a teacher teaches well)

5) Slow learners (can learn from all the above ways but very slowly)

6) Observe-learners(Learns by observing real-world things)

7) Objective learners (Learns only as much as they need to learn, and are theory centric)

8) Smart-learners(They will get the most out of most different sources and accumulate that knowledge effectively)

9) Curios-learners (Curious about so many things like moon mountains to the color of grasshoppers. They want to know it all).

10) Compete-learners(Learns to out-compete their peers, whatever that takes).

11) Story-learners(Learns only when things are taught with stories and practical example)

12) Forced learners (Will not learn till one day before the exam)

13) Passionate learner (Learns each and everything that comes my way)

14) Practical learners (Learns by applying the knowledge in real-time)

15) Teach-learner(Need to teach what they learn, to know that they learned).

16 Quick Learners (Can learn in every way and fast)

17) Money Burners ( Who want to enroll in every course with their father’s money, but won’t learn)

Further, the learners will have multiple traits, that will change over time and need.

Why Knowing this Consumer Group is very important?

Often early-stage EdTech startups and many times even late-stage startups generalize a specific class of students and target the class. For example JEE students, medical students, engineering students, and so on.

This is consumer segmentation, not intra-segment classification. The problem is that every startup is built on the founder’s psychophilosophical phenotype, where the founder himself falls under one of these categories. Therefore the service and solution offering of the startup is always around the founder’s learning type.

Because we like people who are like us, if the founders spend time exploring what type of learner they themselves are, then they can easily target the specific type of consumers within the consumer segment the startup is targetting.

Once a startup identifies its consumer category of its, then it can curate its offering and narration to target only those consumer groups. This will result in far better satisfaction for the consumers and will result in good penetration amongst that specific category.

Example

10% of the engineering students are group learners. We are a niche social learning platform for the group-learning Engineering students

will be a multitude of times better than just saying:-

We are a social learning platform for engineering students. We are a social learning platform for all students is an absolute deal breaker.
