Mood Dysregulation Test

This test is adopted from Hirschfeld & Spitzer’s original MDQ1Hirschfeld R, Williams J, Spitzer RL, et al. Development and validation of a screening instrument for bipolar spectrum disorder: the Mood Disorder Questionnaire. Am J Psychiatry. 2000;157:1873-1875. scale for testing the initial mood dysregulation symptoms.

This test is only for your self-assessment to know whether you have any mood dysregulation issues that can become a pathology in the future or not.

Difference Between Mood and Feelings

Feelings are the state of Neurochemicals in the brain that is the result of the physiological state of the body as sensed by the brain. The physiological state of the body is hormonal, chemical, and electrical. The body’s physiology changes every second depending upon the senses, thoughts, metabolism, pathology, interaction, presence of other people, and so on. When the brain measures the average physiology of the body, then it produces various neurochemicals such as dopamine and norepinephrine or inhibits such chemicals. Based on the state of these chemicals in the brain, the brain then contextualizes the neurochemical state into meaning. You may feel happy, surprised, sad, afraid, confused, and so on, and such feelings can vary every second.

On the other hand, the mood is the average continuous same feeling and is often classified as good or positive/ bad or negative. Unlike feelings, which may change every second, the mood is rather consistent and may remain consistent for one day, several days, or week, or even months.

Balanced Mood

Because in order to feel anything, the brain’s Neurochemicals must change, and the brain must be able to sense those changes; the brain tries to maintain an average mood, neither very high nor very low.

Mood Swing

Mood swing is one where our mood varies from the average to the higher and lower sides. Everyone suffers mood swings, which increase when one is under stress. However, frequent mood-swing is an early sign of an unhealthy lifestyle, negative people in life, excessive stress, overthinking, and so on. If not addressed when mood swing increases, the frequent mood swings then progress towards mood disorders.

Mood Dysregulation

Mood dysregulation is when the brain fails to bring the mood back to the average levels. When one remains very high and happy for a very long period or becomes in a low state for a very long period, it slowly fails to reach to the average levels. Whether it is excessive positivity or excessive negativity over a sustained period, the brain fails to bring the mood back to the average levels, and thus, one stops feelings.

Not feeling anything is a very important marker of initial mood dysregulation. This often leads to various maniac disorders such as manic depressive disorder as brain madly tries to bring the mood back to normal.

Note once mood dysregulation progresses, it becomes a psychotic disorder and irreversible. Here, in this test, you are assessing only your initial mood dysregulation, which may lead to future psychotic disorders. Therefore this is a preventive test for you.

Mood and Energy

Mood determines the energy regulation of the body. When the mood is low, the body downregulates your metabolic rate, slowing down the processes such as digestion. Then you feel a lack of energy. Feeling a lack of energy over a sustained period of time may lead to tiredness.

On the other hand, if you feel euphoric, your body always feels very energetic as the body upregulates the metabolism. You feel hungry more and more. You feel hyperactive, and want to go out, socialize and enjoy.

Mood and Organs

The liver is a major metabolic organ, followed by the gut and kidney. Therefore mood dysregulation significantly affects liver health, followed by gut and kidney health. Because the liver also produces important hormones, mood dysregulation often leads to hormonal imbalance. Our reproductive organs are, in particular, very sensitive to hormones. Thus mood dysregulation causes significant pathology in Ovaries.

Mood and Hormones

Estrogen is our primary mood hormone. After the brain contextualizes the feelings, Estrogen is secreted, which conveys the mood from the brain to the other organs. This is because the entire body has to be ready for energy regulation according to the mood. Because Estrogen and insulin are responsible for energy storage, mood disorder often leads to Insulin resistance and Estrogen insensitivity. One of the common outcomes of this in females is PCOS and menstruation irregularity.

Mood and Sexuality

Because average but a little positive mood is one of the critical aspects for the brain to feel, under mood dysregulation, one stops feeling. This extends to not feeling the partner also. Because of a lack of feeling, the willingness for sex reduces and leads to hypoactive sexual disorder.

If this test results in mood dysregulation, and if you also feel low in sex drive, you can test your hypoactive sexual desire disorder from our free online clinically validated test.
