Self-Efficacy
Self-efficacy refers to an individual’s belief in his or her capacity to execute behaviors necessary to produce specific performance attainments (Bandura, 1977, 1986, 1997)1Bandura, Albert, and Richard E. Watts. “Self-efficacy in changing societies.” (1996): 313-315.. Self-efficacy reflects confidence in the ability to exert control over one’s own motivation, behavior, and social environment. Self-efficacy is therefore a sub-function of our subconscious mind. This is a belief system, that drives the way we are tuned to solve a problem.
Problem Solving Mechanism
- Our subconscious mind trains the muscles(for example hand’s limbic muscles for shoe lace tying)
- Neurons trigger in different patterns(not yet fully understood), to associate distant information(for example our brain can generate cues from a music show about how to write certain codes).
- Conscious mind executes the plans using skills, knowledge, resources, past experience etc.
- Brain use focus to execute a work.
- Ego-function protects the belief that the new work can be done, and that the problem can be solved.
- You add new learnings and skills as you go on solving the problem, facing new challenges.
- Social skills(neo cortex and pre-frontal-cortex part of the brain) helps us to collaborate and coordinate with other people to carry out the work.
- Practice gives us the confidence.
- Past success gives us the competence.
Therefore self-efficacy is the combination of your knowledge, skill, confidence, competence, people’s skill, self-belief, and not really how much problems you have solved, or what kind of difficult problems you may solve.
