About Menopause
Menopause is the natural phenomenon when the reproductive age of a woman comes to an end. From the early symptom onset to final menopause may take years. In India, the Menopausal age is 46 years on average. The menopausal age in western countries is about 51. Early menopause is also called perimenopause when the Estrogen in the woman’s body keeps dropping over a period of 12-48 months. A woman is said to have attained menopause after she doesn’t have menstruation for 12 months. Read more about Hormonal changes during menopause in this paper.1Burger, Henry G., et al. “Hormonal changes in the menopause transition.” Recent progress in hormone research 57 (2002): 257-276.Amenorrhea
Another common symptom that is common in modern times is amenorrhea 2Practice Committee of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. “Current evaluation of amenorrhea.” Fertility and sterility 82 (2004): 33-39. , which is missing periods. Conditions like PCOS, PCOD, and any other inflammatory, metabolic disorders in women may cause amenorrhea, where they may miss periods for several months. The difference between Amenohhrea and Perimenopause is in the Estrogen levels. In Amenohhhea, Estrogen levels are sufficient, but there are more Androgens and impaired LH and FSH hormones. In Perimenopause, though, the Estrogen levels fall in consecutive months.Read about Lyfas case study of reversal of Amenorrhea.By measuring bi-monthly hormonal changes, Amenorrhea can be distinguished from Perimenopause.ยHowever, such a regular and frequent blood test is not feasible. Due to the fact that many Indian women(almost 4-8%) of the population are meeting their menopause at an early age(between 29-35), it is important to track the symptoms, if a woman has missed her periods for a few months.
